Cultivated meat can be considered halal

GOOD Meat, the cultivated meat division of our portfolio company Eat Just, Inc., announced that a group of leading Islamic scholars advised that real meat made from cells, without raising and slaughtering animals can be considered halal if production meets certain criteria.

This approval is a big step forward for international acceptance of cultivated meat within the halal market, which represents about 25% of the world’s population.

The new opinion was issued by a trio of Shariah scholars, who established specific conditions for cultivated meat to be considered halal, such as the source of the cell line, adherence to Islamic slaughtering practices, and the use of permissible nutrients.

While GOOD Meat’s current chicken cell line and production process do not fully meet these criteria, they plan to work towards meeting the halal guidelines. This development is important for cultivated meat companies looking to cater to regions with significant Muslim populations, including the Middle East, and aligns with the increasing global demand for halal products.
