Plant-based “chicken” is the meat-alternative trend set to take over in 2020. KFC just launched a wider test of its Beyond fried “chicken,” and El Pollo Loco just rolled out Chickenless Pollo nationwide.
There are several reasons that could explain why this boom is happening now: plant-based “chicken” may have taken longer to develop than “beef,” the chicken sandwich is the new hot item in fast food, and the unprecedented success of plant-based “beef” has provided companies with proof that meat alternatives are commercially viable.
However, the coronavirus pandemic is likely to affect the trend’s momentum. Restaurants are struggling with government restrictions and a drastic decrease in traffic.
